About Steel Jam
Mary Spalding is the founder of Steel Jam. A native Midwesterner, she moved to San Francisco in 1993 in order to participate in the thriving World Music scene in the Bay Area…and…to never have to shovel snow again!
- She has a music undergraduate degree from the Lawrence University Conservatory
- She obtained a graduate degree in World Music from Wesleyan University
She has devoted the past 25 years to studying and performing steel drum music and in addition to forming Steel Jam, she has performed in Trinidad with award-winning steel bands for Panorama steel band competitions and Carnival activities.
She also is a popular performer for school assembly programs and hands-on steel drum workshops.
Her acclaimed multimedia presentations about the history and culture of Caribbean music delight church and civic groups as well as AARP and senior gatherings throughout the country.
Steel Jam prides itself on offering our clients the most talented and experienced musicians from the Bay Area. We configure the band according to your event’s needs and budget, with anywhere from 1 to 5 musicians on steel drums and a variety of percussion, including congas, timbales, shekere, cow bells, shakers, drum set, and more. With our computerized background music and original arrangements, we provide a full band sound appropriate for any and every venue and occasion.
